If you've been browsing our range and keep seeing the same ingredients crop up, there's a reason. Nordic skincare draws on a very specific botanical vocabulary — plants that have survived, and thrived, in extreme cold, low light and short growing seasons. That stress gives them unusual protective compounds. Here are three worth knowing.
Arctic Cloudberry
Cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) grows wild above the treeline across Scandinavia and Finland. It's slow to ripen — just a few weeks per year — and its oil is one of the richest plant sources of tocopherols (vitamin E) and rare omega fatty acids. On skin, it's an exceptional antioxidant that helps defend against free-radical damage, while its essential fatty acids support the skin barrier. You'll find it in several Nörre Nordic formulas.
Birch Sap
In early spring, birch trees pump sap upward before a single leaf opens. That sap is collected by hand, tapped from the trunk over just a few days. It contains xylitol (a natural humectant), vitamins B and C, amino acids and minerals. As an ingredient, it replaces or supplements water in formulas, delivering active molecules alongside hydration. It's a lighter, more skin-compatible base than plain water.
Sea Buckthorn
The vivid orange berries of Hippophaë rhamnoides are one of the most nutrient-dense botanicals in Nordic skincare. Sea buckthorn berry oil contains omega-7 (palmitoleic acid), which is rare in plants — it naturally occurs in human sebum and supports skin repair and barrier function. It's also high in carotenoids, giving it that distinctive orange pigment. Used in small concentrations, it brightens and nourishes without overwhelming the skin.
These three ingredients show up across our brand partners' ranges precisely because they're suited to the kind of skin challenges — cold, damp, wind — that Irish and Nordic climates share. When you see them on an ingredients list, you can be confident there's real purpose behind the formulation.
